Landing pages, as with every website page, are not inherently SEO friendly. They don’t have naturally built-in keywords, nor do they start ranking just because your website SEO is “okay.” An SEO-friendly landing page requires the same prep and work like when you originally launched your website – and if you didn’t craft an SEO-friendly website, I suggest checking out our free checklist first.

What is Landing Page SEO Optimization?

Optimizing your landing page for SEO is essentially crafting a landing page (commonly referred to as a sales page) that is optimized for search engines. This includes utilizing SEO best practices such as using a keyword strategy, clarifying your offers and who it serves, and backend optimization – like header tags, image alts, and meta descriptions.

Landing page SEO differs from traditional website optimization due to its unique purpose – direct conversions. The purpose of a landing page is to convert to a sale or sign-up for your offer, whether that’s paid or free. In the aspect of your funnel, a landing page is the second step to which users are redirected to. This could look like a visitor being directed to your landing page through your blog post or your home page.

Do Landing Pages Affect SEO?

Technically, any public page on your website affects your website’s SEO – that includes your landing pages. Landing pages can help your SEO by improving your ranking for keywords relating to the audience you serve, the problems you solve, and the resources you offer. As long as your landing page offer is aligned with your business, these keywords will help you rank for similar keywords in the future.

On the other hand, landing pages can hurt your SEO if you’re not careful. Unaligned offers can cause you to rank for unrelated keywords, slow loading pages can pull do your performance rating, and mobility issues can cause users to quickly leave your site – causing the way Google views your site to plummet.

What Are The Best Practices for Landing Page SEO?

Most landing page SEO best practices are in line with standard website best practices. Outside of keywords and general website performance, here are a few tips for crafting an SEO-friendly landing page:

  • Use a pre-made landing page template to ensure your headers and performance are top quality.
  • Identify the who, what, where, and how of your offer – and make it CLEAR in your landing page copy.
  • Don’t neglect the details. Do the research to ensure you’re not skipping any SEO steps like checking your URL structure or image quality.
  • Check your landing page’s mobility before publishing, this includes your checkout or a sign-up section.
