When was the last time you checked your Google page ranking? If it’s been more than a few months, it’s time to check again!
Checking your Google page ranking can be fun and informative. You can see what keywords and pages are bringing the most traffic to your website. You can also find keywords you didn’t even know you ranked for! This can give you an idea of what people are searching for and can provide an opportunity to continue writing about that topic.
So let me share how to check and improve your Google page rankings.
Don’t Search Google to Find Your Google Page Ranking
First off, don’t search Google to find your Google page ranking. I know this sounds counterintuitive, but what you see isn’t correct. It’s customized to your searches, and I bet you search for your business or others like it A LOT. Google knows the searches you want to see.
Your search terms are also biased because you know the keywords you used on your website. You know exactly what to search to find what you need from your website. Your physical location also impacts the search results you see. Google knows your location, so searching for terms like “wedding photographer” will show results in your area.
It’s better to do keyword research on a tool that isn’t biased!
How to Check for Specific Keywords
Google Search Console is a great place to research specific keywords. To check your ranking for specific keywords:
- Sign in to Google Search Console.
- Add and verify your website if you haven’t already.
- Go to the “Performance” section.
- Filter the data by specific keywords to see how your website is performing for those terms.
This will show you how your ranking for a keyword compares to other competitors. It’ll show you the search volume, your current standing, and how much traffic you get from that term. If the volume is high, but your traffic from it is low, it could be an opportunity to improve your ranking.
How to Check for Other Keywords You Rank For
I love to use Ubersuggest for this. Simply plug in your website to the Keyword Overview section and a list of the keywords you rank for will appear. This is a great way to find high-performing keywords and the page they’re on.
You can also find keywords you didn’t even know you ranked for! This can be a great insight into what people are searching for. If you find you rank highly for “best websites for entrepreneurs”, you could make that a blog series on your website! Just don’t use the same keyword over and over again. You don’t want to compete with yourself! Use the keyword as inspiration to see what people are interested in.
Remember that keyword rankings can fluctuate frequently due to algorithm updates, competition, and user behavior. Track your rankings over time and focus on improving your website’s overall SEO to achieve better positions in search results.
How to Improve Your Google Page Ranking
I also want to share how to improve your Google page ranking. If you aren’t happy with the results after your research, the good news is you can improve! It does take time (as all things with SEO do), but your small steps of improvement will show great results in time.
Focus on Keywords and Content
From your research, you should find high-traffic keywords with little competition. These are fantastic opportunities for you to provide value in this area. Informative and engaging content that addresses the needs and interests of your target audience is how you improve your Google page ranking. Regularly update your content to keep it fresh and relevant.
Ensure a Positive User Experience
A negative user experience can result in high bounce rates, which tells Google that people don’t like your content. In turn, they’ll show your pages in fewer search results. Your website needs to be responsive and mobile-friendly; Google prioritizes mobile-friendly sites in its rankings.
The page speed and loading times need to be optimized. Ideally, each page should load in under two seconds on mobile and desktop. Compress images and reduce server response times to enhance performance.
Your website should also be easy to navigate. Provide clear calls to action and a user-friendly interface so people can find exactly what they need when they land on your website.
Backlink Strategy
Backlinks are your links on other people’s websites. It shows Google that other people think your content is valuable and worth sharing with their audience. The more high-quality backlinks you have, the better. Here are a few tips to help you earn backlinks:
- Collaborating on blogs, podcasts, etc. with other brands
- Ask for guest post opportunities
- If someone you work with asks for a testimonial, see if they will link to your site
Improving your Google Page Ranking is an ongoing process that requires patience and consistent effort. It’s important to stay up-to-date with the latest trends and adjust your strategies to maintain and enhance your search engine rankings.
